The Difference Between Fingerless Grips and Finger Hole Grips
There are many different types of grips for weightlifting out there today, but the names of these products can be confusing. For example, do an online search for “fingerless grips” and you’ll see products that look completely different.

Some products have two or three finger holes where the fingers meet the palm. Others have a palm piece but no finger holes. What’s the difference between these products, and which is best? We’ll unpack this below. Before we dive in, let’s define what grips are and why they’re useful.
What are weightlifting grips?
While no two products are exactly alike, in general, grips are weightlifting accessories you wear to protect your hands and get a better grip on the bar. They’re not the same as fingerless
gloves, which cover the entire palm—front and back—plus the lower part of the fingers.
By helping you grasp the bar, weightlifting grips indirectly help support your wrists, which can help lower your risk of injury. Using grips can also help boost your mind-muscle connection (MMC) by allowing you to focus on the muscles you’re working, rather than worrying about your grip. This can help you get the most out of each rep.
Fingerless grips vs. finger hole grips
Not all grips are created equal or are designed for every type of exercise. Let’s compare fingerless grips (grips that cover the palms) and finger hole grips.
Fingerless grips
Fingerless grips, sometimes called palm protectors, don’t have finger holes. Instead, a tacky piece of cushioned material lays over your palm, and you secure the grip to your wrist with a strap. Again, we’re
not talking about fingerless gloves, which slide over your entire hand and cover part of your fingers.
Fingerless grips help protect your palms from abrasions and calluses, but their most important function is helping you grip the bar. The open finger design allows for better tactile sensitivity and more natural hand movement.
Finger hole grips
Grips with finger holes (two or three) are often just simple pieces of material that cover your palm and wrap around your wrist. Some finger hole grips create a fold of material between the bar and your fingers, creating a dowel effect. This extra material is supposed to help you grip the bar better by creating torque.
Grips with finger holes are usually available in different sizes, but if the fit isn’t just right, it can compromise your grip and restrict range of motion in your hand. And less control means a higher risk of injuries and accidents.

Choosing grips guards and not sure which ones?
Have you been doing CrossFit for a while and starting to realize that you can't go on without palm protection?
Then you are in the right place and we will try to advise you today on which grips guards might be ideal for you and what to watch out for when choosing.
It’s important to mention at the beginning that learning to work with grips guards can also take a few training sessions, so we recommend not condemning them immediately and returning to the “old proven option” where you didn’t use them and had torn palms daily, because if we look at, for example, the CrossFit Games or most of the coaches at your gym, most of them will be using grips guards and will also gladly advise you on how to use each type.
There are two main types of grips guards: fingerless and with fingers. Previously, grips guards were used that had a hole for the fingers, but the current hit is precisely the fingerless grips guards, which are simple to use and very practical even for other exercises than just gymnastics.
- Fingerless grips guards (aka no hole grips).
grips guards, which are produced by a whole range of brands - Picsil, Victory Grips, BearKomplex, Workout
They are very practical, easy to use and you will get used to them relatively quickly.
Definitely get advice on how to use grips guards and how to handle them before first use.
grips guards work on the so-called hooking onto the bar, thanks to which you hold nicely on the bar and they take care of the grip for you
- grips guards with finger holes (three-finger or four-finger)
grips guards, which are still available, but are not as trendy anymore. They are made by brands such as Victory Grips, Picsil, BearKomplex, and even WORKOUT.
With grips guards, it is necessary to have the right size and do not be afraid to go for a size slightly larger.
grips guards work on the principle of a so-called wave, which you hold onto the bar with and thus have double protection, as the grips guard is bent twice at the grip point. In this case, you need the bend to be larger so that you can comfortably hold onto the bar or rings and the “wave” is not too small.
grips guards can also be used as fingerless by simply flipping the grips guard over the bar. However, we do not recommend this variant for fingered ones, as it significantly reduces the life of the grips guards.
