When considering a Frameless Glass balustrade, its clean lines might make it appear less substantial than traditional framed systems. However, this design is far from weak. Each Balconette Frameless Glass balustrade is sturdily supported by an anodised aluminium base shoe, paired with laminated glass for added strength.

Compliance with Building Regulations

Our balustrade systems not only meet aesthetic expectations but are also compliant with British Standards for residential settings. According to these regulations, the handrail must withstand 0.74 kilo Newtons (kN) per meter length, which equates to the weight of individuals (75kg) leaning against it at one-meter intervals.

The Combination of Base Shoe and Laminated Glass

Frameless Glass balustrades, also known as structural glass or cantilevered balustrades, are engineered for strength and stability to satisfy compliance with BS regulations.

The Balconette SG12 Frameless Glass Balustrades system is founded on two essential principles:

  1. A robust base, commonly referred to as a base shoe or 'U' channel, that securely clamps thick glass panels.
  2. High-strength glass designed to resist bending and impact from people and environmental conditions. The SG12 series features 21.5mm thick laminated, toughened glass.

Installing Glass Balustrade Base Shoes

There are two primary methods to attach the base shoe to its surface: installation can occur either above or below the floor. An installation below the surface creates a seamless look, while an above-ground installation features an evident channel, enhancing spatial distinction. Those installed above floor level come with a decorative cover plate for aesthetics. Both approaches, however, offer the same structural integrity.

For both methods, the base shoe must be securely bolted to a solid substrate like steel or concrete. Connecting to a weaker surface can lead to failure under heavy loads.

Once the base shoe is attached correctly, it is ready to support the laminated glass. This involves setting the glass in the channel and stabilizing it with glazing wedges.
