In the smelting process of iron and steel products, due to factors such as smelting time, holding time, and overheating time, the carbon content in the molten iron can not reach the theoretical value expected for smelting. The carbon-containing substances added in order to supplement the carbon content lost during the smelting of steel are called recarburizer.

Graphitized petroleum coke is to place petroleum coke in a graphitization furnace, and after a high temperature of about degrees, the amorphous turbostratic structure carbon crystal of petroleum coke is transformed into hexagonal layered structure crystalline carbon, that is, petroleum coke becomes graphite. It has the advantages of fast absorption, high carbon and low sulfur. Its carbon content is 98-99%, and the sulfur content is less than 0.05% or 0.03%. Another way comes from the cutting waste of graphite electrode. Since the graphite electrode itself is graphitized, its waste can also be used as a recarburizer for steel mills.

The use of recarburizer: the charging method of electric furnace smelting, the recarburizer should be put in together with the charge such as scrap steel, and a small dose can be added on the surface of molten iron. However, it is necessary to avoid feeding molten iron in large quantities, so as to prevent excessive oxidation and cause insignificant carbon increase effect and insufficient carbon content in castings. The amount of recarburizer added is determined according to the ratio of other raw materials and the carbon content.
