In a recent conversation, kumate commented: "Grouse hunter, I admire your wooden floor. I have access to a local sawmill that supplies rough-cut lumber. Can you elaborate on the materials you utilized for the frame, floor, and supports?" He mentioned needing to construct an outdoor kennel since his pup spends many hours in a crate. He currently owns a 10x10 chain link kennel with a shaded roof but is searching for a reliable base. He has tried limerock, which created excessive dust, but thinks stall mats could be a viable option. "I use them in my garage for weights, and I see they are available for about $40 each at a local tractor supply store. However, I'm concerned about properly leveling the ground."

My deck features rough-cut oak. For its construction, I created a box frame, using boards laid long ways inside, functioning as cross beams. To enhance sturdiness, the entire frame incorporates two boards doubled up. Additional boards were laid to form the decking. It's crucial to assemble it soon after procuring the wood. If the wood sits for too long after cutting, it becomes significantly harder to drive in nails, ultimately requiring a drill, as I experienced. Also, the box frame is secured with large bolts—visible in the picture—which makes the structure mobile and flexible. If desired, dismantling it is easy; just remove the bolts and enjoy a wonderful weenie roast with friends.
