All You Need To Know About Annealing Equipment

Annealing equipment plays a vital role in the industrial heat treatment process. In simple terms, annealing involves heating metal to a specific temperature and then gradually cooling it down. This controlled heating and cooling cycle alters the metal's properties, making it more malleable, ductile, or even stronger.

View Details

The primary purpose of annealing equipment is to relieve internal stresses within the metal structure, which may develop during manufacturing processes like casting or forging. By subjecting the material to carefully calibrated temperatures and durations, annealing equipment relaxes these stresses and enhances the overall structural integrity of the metal.

Common Applications of Annealing Equipment

1. Metal Manufacturing:

In the metal manufacturing industry, annealing equipment is essential for stress relief and softening metals such as steel, aluminum, and copper. Controlled heating and cooling cycles reduce internal stresses, increase ductility, and improve machinability.

2. Glass Industry:

The glass industry relies heavily on annealing equipment during production. It ensures glass products cool down gradually to avoid thermal shock, preventing fractures or breakage. This controlled cooling process enhances the strength and durability of glass items, such as bottles, windows, and optical lenses.

3. Automotive Sector:

Annealing equipment is extensively used in automotive manufacturing. It strengthens components such as engine parts, gears, and springs by eliminating residual stresses formed during fabrication or machining. This process improves fatigue resistance while maintaining dimensional stability.

4. Aerospace Engineering:

Annealed materials are commonly utilized in aerospace engineering due to their high reliability under extreme conditions. The heat treatment provided by annealing equipment enhances mechanical properties of aircraft components like turbine blades and landing gear parts, ensuring optimal performance at elevated temperatures.

5. Plastics Industry:

In plastic processing industries, such as injection molding or blow molding, annealing is employed for stress relief post-molding. This process results in reduced warpage issues, ultimately improving product quality and longevity.

6. Electronics Manufacturing:

With electronic devices becoming more compact and delicate, proper thermal management is crucial to prevent failures caused by temperature-induced defects.

MARK II DB Annealer

The MARK II annealer features auto-adjusting fans that increase power as the device warms up. If the output inductor reaches 190°F/90°C, a thermal cut-out activates to protect the unit. If this occurs, keep the annealer turned on to allow the fans to continue cooling. It will automatically reset after 30 minutes once cooling is complete.

Similar to any induction heater, with extended use, the output inductor gradually heats up. Multiple fans are installed in our annealer to keep the circuitry and inductor cool. After 40 to 50 cases have been annealed, the unit's top behind the pilot may feel warm to the touch; this is normal.

The output inductor features a custom-manufactured ferrite core with an air gap that focuses magnetic fields. As a result, there is no work coil that could burn out or need replacement. Since there is no work coil, water cooling is unnecessary. The machine's ability to run for an extended time also depends on the ambient room temperature. Avoid placing it in direct sunlight or high-temperature environments; an ideal room temperature is around 70°F/20°C.

The AMP annealing machine supports a universal power input, enabling operation worldwide across any line voltage from 85V to 265V. It is rated for up to 750 Watts but typically operates at under 600 Watts, similar to a small microwave oven.

Run time

Thanks to our new circuitry, provided the ambient temperature is around 70°F/20°C, the annealer can be operated continuously for a minimum of 200 cases on any program setting without reaching the cut-out limit. Many customers exceed this limit.

Safety

AMP features a fully shielded housing. Induction naturally produces electromagnetic interference when the unit is powered. If uncontrolled, this can affect other electronic devices such as radios. Therefore, federal regulations apply. Our shielded housing and electrical filtering effectively block and contain all emissions. AMP has passed all international EMC/FCC and electrical safety standards. The unit also has internal shielding enclosures to ensure accurate and reliable performance.

The MARK II Annealer comes with our patented AZTEC mode, allowing you to analyze your own brass and generate the correct setting. You sacrifice one case in the analysis process, and the annealer applies the correct algorithm (derived from extensive in-house metallurgical testing) to generate the proper annealing setting for that case. No guesswork or trial and error is involved.

Uniquely, our induction annealer has adjustable power and time settings integrated into the pre-programs. This allows for small, precise increments in annealed neck hardness. When setting the right program for new brass in our lab, we start low and gradually work up to reach the target hardness.

We then publish these results (Legacy STANDARD mode) on our website's settings page for the benefit of all AMP users. This ongoing effort is made possible by the hundreds of samples we have tested. We encourage customers to utilize this free service for guaranteed accurate results.

Ergonomics

The MARK II was designed to allow one-by-one case feeding by hand; however, for larger batches, the AMP MATE can automate the process. The AMP MATE interfaces with most case hoppers like Dillon or Hornady if an appropriate stand is constructed.

The new DB model features a touch screen, making usage even easier. The touch screen is also user-replaceable if damage occurs in the future.

Pilots

Depth of insertion into the air gap is crucial. A variation of just a few millimeters can significantly affect the result. Therefore, we now supply depth-specific pilots that do not require adjustment. Simply thread them all the way in, and they're ready for use. However, some commonality exists; for example, the family .243 W, 7-08 R, and 308 W all share the same pilot #11.
