How to Save Money When Buying Releasable Zip Ties

These ties are great for a variety of uses, and less wasteful because they're reusable.

For household use I prefer these more often over conventional ties. I've used them for typical applications, e.g. securing wires to pipe or PVC or securing things/cables to a bicycle/handlebars. But with small tweaks, I've used 2 to secure a fridge plug to a short extension cord so the plug can't accidentally separate from the extension cord, (See 2nd photo), and I've secured a single plug to a horizontally-mounted outlet so that plug can't come out. (See 1st photo). In that case, the plug is for a low-emission forced-exhaust fan for our water heater, a place where the heater could continue to burn even if the exhaust fan is disconnected, leading to possible exhaust fumes infiltrating the house.

What allows some of the extra applications is the width of these ties. I use a hole punch near the flat end of the tie to make a hole in the tie, then insert the flat end into the "lock" end, then secure the tie to a plug or cord, then use the outlet cover-plate screw to secure the tie to the outlet cover & electrical box. (See the 1st photo).
I use a similar approach to prevent a plug from separating from an extension cord. The key is making a hole in the "flat" end of "Tie A" wide enough for "Tie B" to fit through that hole. I wrap and snug "Tie A" around the plug I want to secure, then put the flat end of "Tie B" through the hole I made in "Tie A". Lastly, I wrap and snug"Tie B". This prevents the plug from separating from the extension cord but still allows for separation when necessary by pressing the "lock" button on either tie. (See the 2nd photo).

Even after making the holes, these ties are still reusable. (Just don't make the holes too large, or the ties will break at the hole, If so, they'll still be usable, but shorter).
